EL PRÍNCIPE is set in the dangerous real- life neighbourhood of El Príncipe, in Ceuta, a Spanish town on the North African coast surrounded by Moroccan territory. Because of the logistical challenges and safety considerations needed to shoot the entire series on location in Ceuta, the producers at Plano a Plano built sets in their Madrid soundstage and turned to the team at Stargate Studios Malta to transform these into the neighbourhood of El Príncipe through the use of Visual Effects.
The work carried out by the visual effects artists in Malta ranged from compositing shots filmed in full green environments to set extensions of Ceuta vistas using motion matte-paintings. There were also a considerable amount of full green driving scenes completed using the full library of landscapes and driving plates captured by the Stargate Orbis Rig during multiple visits to Ceuta.
The plot revolves around new police captain Morey arrives to Ceuta in order to manage the conflictive precinct of El Príncipe. Until then, the station was informally run by no-nonsense veteran cop Fran, who privileges his own rules to the Law in order to maintain peace in the cartel-ridden quarter. The first season, aired on Telecino in Spain, went on to achieve record breaking audience ratings, registering a 33.3% audience share (6.29 million viewers) in the Season Finale aired on May 6th 2014. The series has also aired in Chile and Italy.
El Príncipe won the Critics’ Choice Award for “its narrative quality and advanced production with the use of new technological resources” along with the Series of the Year Award (chosen by the writer’s guild) at the prestigious Festval 2014, Spain’s only TV-exclusive Festival.
